Things to Know
The Norfolk Water Division is on call 24 hours a day. In case of emergency call the Norfolk Police Department at 508-528-3206.


What do I do if I experience brown water:
Residents who experience rusty or dirty water should to the following:
1.  Flush water pipes using COLD WATER ONLY from a bath tub until the water runs clear, then all other cold water fixtures in the house.
2.  Check water before washing clothes.
3.  Check water prior to running dishwasher.
4.  Check water before using for cooking.
5.  If WHITE clothes become discolored, "Iron Out" is available at the local hardware store and at the DPW office between the hours of 8:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.

Where does Norfolk's water come from:
We have two gravel packed wells, the Gold Street Well located near the intersection of Medway Street and Myrtle Street, and the Spruce Road Well located near Mirror Lake Avenue. Both wells draw from the Charles River watershed.

How often and what is the water tested for:
Secondary Contaminant (yearly) that includes calcium, iron, manganese, etc. Bacteriological Analysis (monthly) that includes Coliform, Fecal E. Coli. VOC, nitrate, nitrite, inorganics (yearly).

What is the pH of the water:
Gold Street Well 6.50, and Spruce Road Well 5.88. Adjusted to 7.40 - 7.80 with NaOH (liquid Sodium Hydroxide 50%)

Hydrant flushing:
Is currently scheduled in the spring and fall of each year.  Please see the "Hydrant Flushing" link noted above for specific flushing information.

When do water bills go out:
Semi-annually, in April and October.

When does the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) go out:
The CCR is mailed to water customers in the second quarter of each year, reporting data from the previous calendar year.  In addition to this website, it is also posted on bulletin boards at the Town Hall, the Library, the Post Office and the DPW facility.  

What are the water rates:
The water rates are as follows: Basic charge (5/8" meter) $50 per billing cycle -
0 to 15,000 gallons              -      $5.39 per1000 gallons
15,001 - 35,000 gallons -       $6.83 per 1000 gallons
35,001 - 50,000 gallons -       $8.87 per 1000 gallons
Over 50,000 gallons     -     $12.52 per 1000 gallons

What is the procedure to connect to Town water and how much is the tie-in fee:
The Demand on the System fee is $2,850.00 (1" service) paid to the Norfolk Department of Public Works -  Water Division. The homeowner hires a contractor to install water service from the curb stop at the street to your house, and also hires a licensed plumber to make connections. Larger service fee schedule available upon request.
Are automatic sprinkler systems allowed:  
NO - voted by the Board of Water Commissioners in 1991. Voted water restriction by-law in 1995.

Is there a MANDATORY water ban in effect:
The Norfolk Board of Public Works encourages voluntary water conservation for outside use, however we remain under a MANDATORY water ban.

- Outside Water Use is Restricted to Hand Held Hose Only until further notice

Residents will be informed in the event of a mandatory water ban.
